The DVTect Technology

DVTect is a unique medical device for point-of-care DVT screening based on measuring the waveform of the moving calf. DVTect offers the potential to detect and manage Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT); prevent Pulmonary embolisms and the associated risk of death and save on unnecessary ultrasounds.

Current DVT management

DVT is a significant complication in all surgical and medical wards, as well as in the community. It is a condition that has significant implications for pulmonary embolism and possible death. There are also dangers of continuing morbidity in the legs, and the lungs from the presence of venous thrombo-embolism. At the present time, there is no recognised clinical assessment that has an accuracy greater than 60%, and many patients with DVT have no overt clinical findings. Even where there are suspicious findings, it is necessary to undertake specific investigations for confirmation, usually involving a Doppler ultrasound examination. These investigations are expensive and require significant equipment and expertise.

The DVTect Concept

When a patient has a DVT in the calf, there is a demonstrable change in the calf muscles in response to a percussive stimulus applied to the tissues. In DVT, the normal mobility of the calf is reduced.Kynetyka developed the DVTect screening test to convert this clinical observation into a reproducible, objective point-of-care test.

The DVTect sensor is applied to the calf muscle and measures the mobility of the calf, determining the possibility of a DVT. DVTect is designed to be non-invasive and reproducible with minimal inconvenience to the patient and ease of use for the clinician, nurse or technician.

The DVTect Concept into Action

The DVTect concept is becoming reality with prototype devices being designed and built. Clinically, DVTect is showing significant promise with clinical evaluation showing that the DVTect prototype can tell whether a leg is normal or abnormal thus the indicating possibility of a DVT.

The next steps include:

  1. optimisation of the product design to make DVTect even more user-friendly;
  2. working with a skilled development partner to prepare the product for large-scale production;
  3. conduct of large scale clinical studies to prove the benefits of DVTect and to support product registration.
